Dysphagia
Swallowing difficulties (dysphagia) can occur for many reasons- stroke, brain injury, neurological conditions, progressive illness, ageing, or acute medical changes. Dysphagia can affect eating and drinking safety, enjoyment, nutrition and quality of life.
I offer specialist assessment and practical support to help you understand what is happening, reduce risk, and make eating and drinking as safe and comfortable as possible.
When should you seek a swallowing assessment?
You should seek a swallowing assessment if you notice
- Coughing or choking when eating or drinking
- Food sticking in your throat
- Unexplained weight loss
- Recurrent chest infections
- Changes in voice quality after swallowing
- If mealtimes have become harder, slower or more effortful.
Any change that makes swallowing feel unsafe, uncomfortable or worrying is a good reason to get specialist advice. Early assessment helps reduce risks and supports safer, more enjoyable eating and drinking.
What Dysphagia Assessment Involves
A swallowing assessment typically includes:
- Detailed case history
- Observation of eating and drinking
- Assessment of oral control, saliva management and swallow timing
- Review of breathing and positioning
- Understanding how fatigue, memory, attention or mobility affect swallowing
- Family members and carers are always encouraged to be involved so we can ensure safe and consistent support at home.
What Therapy & Management May Include
Depending on your needs, therapy may involve:
- Strategies to support safer swallowing
- Positioning, pacing and environmental adjustments
- Food and fluid texture modification advice
- Swallow exercises to strengthen and coordinate muscles
- Fatigue and cognitive support to improve safety
- Compensatory strategies (e.g., double swallow, alternating sips)
- Guidance for family members and carers
- Working alongside medics, dietitians, occupational therapists and physios where needed
