Hello, I'm Sophie.
I’m an independent Highly Specialist Speech and Language Therapist and have worked for nearly 20 years with adults who have acquired communication or swallowing difficulties.
I’m originally from Canterbury and made Sheffield my home after studying here. Before becoming a Speech Therapist I completed a degree in Philosophy, where I became interested by the mind, cognition and the way our identity, emotions and relationships are tied to how we communicate.
I worked as an English teacher in the UK and abroad, a healthcare assistant on an elderly care ward, and later as a Speech Therapy Assistant at St George’s Hospital in London, where I realised what a difference I could make.
I moved to Sheffield in 2007 to retrain as a Speech and Language Therapist and completed my Masters in Human Communication Sciences in 2009, graduating with a distinction in clinical practice. From acute hospitals to rehabilitation units and community teams, I have gained experience accross a wide range of settings and conditions.
Why I love what I do
Being a Speech and Language Therapist is genuinely a privilege. I meet people at moments of intense uncertainty, when communication or swallowing feels unfamiliar, frightening, or overwhelming and I am trusted to help make sense of it.
I love the problem-solving, the creativity, and the process of turning assessment into clear, practical information and strategies that fit into everyday life. I love hearing people’s stories, understanding who they were before their injury, and supporting them as they find new connection and purpose.
The amount and intensity of therapy that people need to make progress can vary, and independent practice gives me the flexibility to offer that in a person centred way. Equally, some clients simply need an assessment and a few sessions or consultancy work and that’s completely fine too.
Over the years, from busy hospital wards to longer-term community rehabilitation, I’ve learned this:
Progress isn’t linear. Ups and downs are not failure, they’re part of recovery.
Many people feel they’ve “lost” the person they were. But with the right support, it’s possible to move towards a new sense of self that feels strong and meaningful.
